Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has asked a Vadodara hospital to collect samples of a person seriously infected with coronavirus for the IVF/Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedure, as the chances of survival of the patient are very low and his wife wants to be the mother of his child. The court has ordered the case on Tuesday considering it an 'extraordinary situation.'

After an immediate hearing on the patient's wife's plea, Justice J Shastri directed a Vadodara hospital to take samples of the patient for IVF/assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure and keep it in the proper place as per medical advice. Nilay Patel, counsel for the patient's wife, said the petitioner wanted to become the mother of her child through IVF/ART procedure but the hospital was not allowing it, so she had to approach the court. The court said, "In view of an exceptionally important situation, interim relief is granted for now and it will be subject to the verdict after the hearing of the relief petition is over.''

The court also issued notices to the state government and the hospital director asking them to clarify their stand on the case by July 23. Patel said the petitioner says that several organs of her husband infected with corona have stopped working and he is on a life support system. According to physicians, the chances of the patient surviving are extremely low. The court directed the petitioner and the assistant public prosecutor present for the dialogue to inform the hospital of the order that the samples of the patient be collected in view of his critical condition.
