Man-elephant conflict is a serious worry in Assam, with a lady murdered in an elephant assault in Nagaon's Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday.

According to witnesses, the woman was murdered by a herd of wild elephants while collecting firewood in the jungle. Hazera Khatun of Rupahihat's Gorajan area has been identified as the dead lady. According to eyewitnesses, the lady sells firewood for a living and went to the forest on Sunday evening with 10-12 other women to collect wood.

A herd of wild elephants appeared as they were collecting wood, and they attempted to run in fear. The elephants were apparently startled by the movement and attacked them. Hazera, like the other ladies with her, was stamped to death as she fell in front of the herd. The villagers were informed, but her corpse was not found until Sunday night since the herd was still around. After the wild jumbos had departed the area, the body was found on Monday.

Villagers have demanding that two rogue elephants in the region be sent to the district's Tamor Pingla nature sanctuary's Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, he added. "Since 2014, 48 people have been murdered in Pyare attacks in Surajpur and other areas, and permission from the state government has been sought to relocate the elephant to a rescue centre," the source added.
