New Delhi: The Indian government is now preparing to bring gig workers under the social security scheme. The government can introduce pension and medical facilities for contract workers working in taxi gregator companies like Ola-Uber and foodservice companies like Zomato. This is expected to benefit Zomato, Swiggy's delivery startup, and millions of temporary employees who work in Amazon, Flipkart e-commerce.

The workers who work temporarily with start-ups or other companies are called gig workers. A large number of gig workers have lost their jobs due to the shock to the economy due to the infection of the corona epidemic in the country. According to government sources, medical facilities like EPF, EPS, ESI, and Ayushman are made available under the EPFO for the employees of the organized sector. Hence there is no need to bring any separate scheme for gig workers. They are provided these facilities under these schemes. If required, a special fund for gig workers can also be created. This dedicated gig worker fund can be created under the current social security scheme.

The Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Labor has also recommended the unemployment allowance for such employees. He says that this allowance should be given to all employees in the unorganized sector. A bill to provide temporary employees with facilities under the Social Security Scheme is to be introduced in Parliament. In this, social security scheme has also been demanded for gig workers.
