New Delhi: The Centre has sought an extension from the Supreme Court to complete consultations on demands for minority status for Hindus in states where their strength has fallen short of others. The central government has said that the matter is very sensitive and will have far-reaching implications. In its fourth affidavit filed on Monday in response to petitions filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay and others, the Central government said it has so far received comments from 14 states and three Union Territories on the issue.

The petitioners have raised doubts over the legal sanctity of the consultation process, saying the Centre cannot notify anyone as a minority after the verdict in the matter. Monday's affidavit said the Centre has held consultative meetings with all state governments and Union Territories. Representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Legal Affairs- Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Higher Education- Ministry of Education, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) and National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) were also present in these meetings.

The Central Government has said that 'Some State Governments / The UTs have sought additional time to hold extensive consultations with all stakeholders before forming their views on the matter. The State Governments were urged that in view of the urgency, they should act expeditiously in the matter to ensure that the views of the State Government are finalized and conveyed to the Ministry of Minority Affairs at the earliest.'

The central government told the court, 'Since the matter is sensitive and it will have far-reaching consequences. State Governments/ More time needs to be considered to enable union territories and stakeholders.' On this, the apex court has given six months' time to the Central Government.
