Priyanka Vadra to contest from Amethi seat? No one has contested assembly elections from Gandhi family till now

Lucknow: Congress General Secretary and UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to contest from Rae Bareli or a seat in Amethi in next year's Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. If that happens, Priyanka will be the first member of the Gandhi family to contest the assembly elections. Earlier, all the members of the Gandhi family have contested only the Lok Sabha elections.

Sources said Priyanka's first choice is Amethi as she will prepare the ground for Lok Sabha elections in Amethi to avenge Rahul Gandhi's defeat there to give Smriti Irani a contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In a meeting held in Lucknow recently, the Advisory Committee had also told Priyanka that her election adjacent will give new strength to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Election strategist Prashant Kishore had also advised Priyanka that she should contest the assembly elections herself.

Though Priyanka Vadra herself has not given any indication about contesting or not, sources say that election preparations have been started by Priyanka Gandhi's office. Data from Rae Bareli and Amethi are being collected for this purpose. Political experts say the Gandhi family's dominance has diminished after Rahul Gandhi lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi. On the other hand, the Gandhi family has lost touch with the people in Rae Bareli as congress working president Sonia Gandhi is not in good health. Priyanka's contest could strengthen congress ties with the public in Amethi and Rae Bareli region.
