New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the issue of same-sex marriage on January 6. A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha has sought a response from the central government in the matter. People supporting it have been demanding for a long time that it should be recognized in India. Recently, responding to the matter in the House, BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi said that Indian society is not ready for same-sex marriage.
Sushil Modi had said that this would lead to complete destruction. Although the Supreme Court decriminalized consensual gay sex in 2018, marriage is yet to be recognized. Let us know that it has been recognized in 32 countries of the world. The apex court will on January 6 hear petitions seeking transfer of petitions pending before high courts for recognition of same-sex marriages to the Supreme Court. A two-judge bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha will hear the matter.
On December 14 last year, the supreme court sought the Centre's response on two petitions seeking transfer of petitions pending in the Delhi High Court to the apex court seeking directions to recognize same-sex marriage. On November 25 last year, the Supreme Court sought a response from the Centre on separate petitions filed by two same-sex couples seeking enforcement of their right to marriage and direct authorities to register their marriages under the Special Marriage Act.
