Amritsar: Assembly elections in Punjab have begun. Gradually, the names of candidates are also being announced by the political parties. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead of all the parties in this matter. However, the AAP is yet to declare its candidate for the Patiala Assembly seat, from where former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has announced to contest.
Let us tell you that Captain Amarinder Singh has unilaterally dominated the Patiala seat for the last 20 years. From 2002 to 2014, he has continuously reached the assembly from here. After this, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Captain Amarinder resigned from the membership of the assembly after defeating BJP candidate Arun Jaitley from Amritsar seat. After resigning in 2014, he fielded his wife Preneet Kaur from Patiala in the by-election. Preneet Kaur also managed to win the election. She was MLA from here from 2014 to 2017. After this, when the assembly elections were held in the state in 2017, Captain Amarinder Singh again contested from Patiala. Captain not only won his seat, but also got majority for his then party i.e. Congress and became CM himself.
However, now Captain Amirinder Singh has parted ways with the Congress. He has formed his own party named Punjab Lok Congress, which has alliance with BJP. Let us inform that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which contested the 2017 elections in alliance with the BJP, has also parted ways from the NDA. The Congress has not yet declared the name of its candidate from Patiala seat. However, a section of Congress is saying that Navjot Singh Sidhu should compete with the Captain from here. However, the decision regarding this has to be taken by the Congress High Command. It is reported that by the end of this week, the Congress party can announce the name of its candidate. Let us inform that SAD has fielded Harpal Juneja as its candidate for this election.
