Will the moon and star on green flag be banned? Supreme Court seeks response from central government

New Delhi: The top court has asked the Centre to file its response in two weeks demanding a ban on the moon-star green flag. The chairman of the UP Shia Wakf Board, Wasim Rizvi, said in the petition that such flags have nothing to do with Islam. This is the flag of Pakistan's party Muslim League. Unfurling it in Muslim neighborhoods causes misunderstanding and tension.

The apex court had earlier asked the Centre to file its response on a plea banning the flag. A two-judge bench headed by Justice AK Sikri had asked Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to give its response to the case. The court had cleared the PIL filed by Wasim Rizvi, chairman of the UP Shia Wakf Board. Rizvi had filed the petition on April 17.

Rizvi says the flag is almost similar to the national flag of Pakistan. Some clerics have wrongly linked the flag to Islam, though they have nothing to do with Islam. He said the flag often causes communal tensions and increases the distance between the two communities. Therefore, it should be banned.  The petition also said that Prophet Mohammad Saheb used a white or black flag in his convoy.
