New Delhi: The apex court on Thursday (January 19) asked the director of Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to constitute a team of doctors on Friday. These instructions have been given so that it can be checked whether 29 weeks of pregnancy can be aborted safely or not. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala asked AIIMS to submit its report to the court after the medical examination of the 20-year-old unmarried B.Tech student.

The apex court has also asked the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) to assist the court in the matter. The counsel appearing for the student told the bench that she is staying in a hostel in Ghaziabad. He said that the girl wanted to abort the unwanted pregnancy, which is about 29 weeks old. The CJI has said in his order, 'At this stage, we consider it appropriate to order that the petitioner is to be assessed by the AIIMS Medical Board.'

They said "We direct the AIIMS director to constitute a medical team on January 20 to consider whether the abortion can be done without any risk or not.'' The Supreme Court has directed the registrar to convey the order to the AIIMS director. The Supreme Court said it would pass orders on January 23 after examining the AIIMS report.
