Bangalore: The Karnataka government has made it clear in the Supreme Court that there is no plan at present to deport Rohingyas living in the capital Bengaluru. The Karnataka government also said that 72 Rohingyas living and working in the city have been identified. The Supreme Court had filed a petition within a year on identifying, detaining and deporting Rohingyas.

In an affidavit in the Supreme Court, the state government said, "The Bengaluru City Police has not placed Rohingyas in any camp or detention centre under its jurisdiction. However, 72 Rohingyas have been identified in Bengaluru city, who are working in various areas and Bengaluru city police have not taken any stern action against them so far and there are no plans to deport them at present.''

At the same time, the state government has also submitted a list of 72 people belonging to the Rohingya community to the Supreme Court and sought quashing of the petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. According to media reports, many of these names are under the age of 12. In August 2017, the Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told Parliament that states have been instructed to trace and deport illegal migrants, including Rohingyas. Two members of the Rohingya community then moved to the Supreme Court against deportation.
