New Delhi: TheArvind Kejriwal government in Delhi has decided to ban the entry of medium and heavy freight vehicles from October to February to control vehicular pollution. This order will be applicable only to commercial vehicles. However, vehicles carrying raw vegetables, fruits, grains, milk and such essential items will be allowed entry.   

According to an official, the entry of vehicles will be banned from October 1 to February 28 this year. He said that in the winter months, the air quality declines due to vehicular pollution. At the same time, there will be no restriction on the entry of diesel-run trucks carrying essential goods other than CNG and electric trucks. There will be no ban on private vehicles either. The decision has been criticised by transporters and traders. Praveen Khandelwal, general secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), said the decision will hit Delhi's business at a time when the capital is the festival and wedding season, as business activities pick up pace.  

He said the federation will demand the intervention of the central government and will also launch an agitation against the Delhi government. The CAIT is convening a meeting of leaders of the Delhi business body next week to take a decision on it.
