These days it is very common for women to have their hair washed in a beauty parlor but a resident incident will leave you in shock. In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman suffered from a beauty salon stroke syndrome at a salon while getting a hair wash.

A woman who suffered from a stroke during a hair wash. As relaxing as head washes at the salon are, the hyperextension of the neck that comes into play by placing it on the washbasins can lead to a serious condition. This phenomenon is called beauty parlour stroke syndrome

This shocking news was shared by Hyderabad-based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar to share the case. He wrote, “I recently saw a 50-year-old woman with symptoms of dizziness, nausea and vomiting which started during her hair wash with shampoo in a beauty parlour. Initially, she was taken to a gastroenterologist, who treated her symptomatically.” 

He further added, “The symptoms did not improve, and the next day she developed a mild imbalance while walking. She was referred to me for an opinion. MRI brain revealed an infarct in the right posterior inferior cerebellar territory, MR angiogram showed left vertebral hypoplasia.” 
What is Beauty Parlour Syndrome

According to Journal of the American Medical Association in 1993 by Dr Michael Weintraub study after he saw five women who had developed serious neurological symptoms following shampoos at hair salon. "Beauty parlour stroke syndrome", otherwise known as a hairdresser-related ischemic cerebrovascular event (HICE) or vertebral-basilar ischemia (VBI), is a rare phenomenon caused by either cerebral artery dissection or vertebral artery compression due to neck positioning and manipulation at the hair salon sink bowl.

If you have diseases like diabetes, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, previous history of brain stroke or heart diseases then you are more prone to this event. This can happen in previously healthy young adults also, especially if they are obese or heavy smoker.  To prevent these   Avoid sudden and excessive neck manipulation during head wash or massage in saloon and Always put lukewarm water while washing the head.
