Women's Equality Day is related to a historic decision taken in America, and many countries around the world talk about women's rights on this day. A century ago, women did not have the right to vote in America, after a long fight, the 19th Amendment came into force in the constitution there on 26 August 1920, when women got the right to vote like men. On 26 August 1972, the then President declared  26 August as Women's Equality Day.

The Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987 (3 of 1988): An Act to provide for the more effective prevention of the commission of sati and its glorification and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, WHEREAS sati or the burning or burying alive of widows or women is revolting to the feelings of human nature and is nowhere enjoined by any of the religions of India as an imperative duty; AND WHEREAS it is necessary to take more effective measures to prevent the commission of sati and its glorification;

Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005: An Act to provide for more effective protection of the rights of women guaranteed under the Constitution who are victims of violence of any kind occurring within the family and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 (28 of 1961) (Amended in 1986): An Act to prohibit the giving or taking of dowry that is any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly by any party or parents of either side at the time of marriage, or before or after the marriage ceremony.

The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986:  An Act to prohibit indecent representation of women through advertisements or in publications, writings, paintings, figures or in any other manner and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (PREVENTION, PROHIBITION and REDRESSAL) Act, 2013: An Act to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at the workplace and for the prevention and redressal of complaints of sexual harassment and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. WHEREAS sexual harassment results in violation of the fundamental rights of a woman to equality under articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution of India and her right to life and to live with dignity under article 21 of the Constitution and right to practice any profession or to carry on any occupation, trade or business with includes a right to a safe environment free from sexual harassment; AND WHEREAS the protection against sexual harassment and the right to work with dignity are universally recognised human rights by international conventions and instruments such as Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, which has been ratified on the 25th June 1993 by the Government of India; AND WHEREAS it is expedient to make provisions for giving effect to the said Convention for protection of women against sexual harassment at workplace.
