World Animal Day, as its name suggests, is a day devoted to the animal kingdom. World Animal Welfare Day is observed annually on October 4 to recognise the bond between people and animals. We are all aware of the significance of animals to our environment and how they not only enrich our existence but also teach us about the true meaning of friendship. Consequently, we can honour their presence on this day.

Without regard to ideology, caste, colour, caste system, or religion, this day is observed worldwide. For those who love and care for these magnificent works of God, today is a special occasion. Numerous animal welfare groups, organisations, charities, and educational institutions take part in the observance of Animal Welfare Day.

Why is the day celebrated? 

Numerous events are planned to disseminate the message of animal love and peace. Under the auspices of World Animal Welfare Day, organisations, activists, and animal lovers are asked to raise awareness. This day is observed by everyone for the same reason, which transcends any distinctions between humans: to promote animal rights globally.

Date and History: 

The inaugural World Animal Day was organised by cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann on March 24, 1925, at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. This is where the history and foundation of World Animal Day can be traced back to. He started the event to spread awareness about animal welfare. At the first event, over 5000 individuals showed their support for the cause. Interestingly, St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, celebrates his feast day on the same day as this International Day of Action (World Animal Day).
