World Asthma Day: Tips to Prevent Asthma

World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. The first World Asthma Day, in 1998, was celebrated in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain. Participation has increased with each World Asthma Day held since then, and the day has become one of the world’s most important asthma awareness and education events.

On this day let read What should be done to alleviate the symptoms of asthma in children:

Limit dust exposure . Babies and toddlers spend 8-10 hours a day in their rooms, so removing dust from the nearest environment is a great idea to start with.

Here's how to reduce dust in your baby’s room:

  • Remove carpets and heavy curtains
  • Wash all bedding and soft toys in hot water
  • Purchase allergen barrier coatings for pillows and mattresses

Protect your child from tobacco smoke. Cigarette smoke is a significant asthma trigger. Some people think that smoking in another room or outside is safe enough, but tobacco smoke enters your hair and clothes, and your child breathes it in when you hug it. This kind of "deadly" hugs are obtained. The best way out is to quit smoking for everyone in your family. If this is not possible, ask smokers to wear protective clothing during the break, which they will take off at the entrance to the house, as well as to cover their hair when they smoke. And this is not nagging, this is something that will greatly facilitate the life of your child, and maybe even save from a particularly strong asthma attack.

Reduce or eliminate the factor of a pet that is allergic to the child. Many children are allergic to pet dander. It is better not to keep the pet at home if it causes a reaction in the child. If this is not possible, at least keep the cat or dog outside the child’s room.

Cockroaches. Even the cleanest owners and homes can have problems with cockroaches. This is a common allergen for urban children with asthma, and parents should do everything possible to get rid of cockroaches. This includes frequent garbage collection, not leaving animal feed unattended. In addition, cover all the holes from which cockroaches can get, including leaking pipes.
