World Habitat Day: Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind

On the first Monday in October, World Habitat Day ushers in Urban October. The day is focused on the annual global observance, which has keynote speakers and roundtable discussions with a particular theme and is hosted in a different country every year. The first World Habitat Day was observed in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1986 under the banner "Shelter is my right."

The global celebration of World Habitat Day with the theme Mind the Gap will take place on October 3, 2022. The documentary Leave No One and No Place Behind will examine the issue of rising inequality as well as difficulties in urban areas.

On the first Monday in October each year, World Habitat Day is observed. The event's main themes are the situation of human habitations and everyone's fundamental right to appropriate shelter. It also wants to make people aware of their obligation to protect future generations habitats. The UN General Assembly established World Habitat Day in 1985 through Resolution 40/202, and it was first observed in 1986.

More than 244 individuals, groups, and initiatives from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America were nominated for the honour this year. 69 proposals were eliminated by the selection committee.

The nominations were evaluated based on their potential for scaling up, contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, and contribution to UN-mandate Habitat's focused on promoting socially and environmentally sustainable cities and human settlements. The Selection Committee also searched for creative reactions and solutions to the "Mind the Gap" World Habitat Day theme in 2022.
