On Friday, Pope Francis condemned saying that the world has turned a blind eye to the condition of the poor, blaming those who have become disproportionately wealthy while blaming the poor for their own fate. Francis flew to Assisi, St. Francis' birthplace, to meet with roughly 500 needy people ahead of the Catholic Church's World Day of the Poor on Sunday.

"The presence of the destitute is frequently perceived as obnoxious and something to be tolerated. After destitute people, including Afghan refugees, related their personal stories in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, he observed, "Sometimes we hear it said that those responsible for poverty are the poor themselves." "It's past time to give the impoverished a voice since their cries have gone unheard for far too long. "It's past time for people's eyes to be opened to realise the state of inequality in which so many families find themselves," Francis stated.

Francis, who became the first Latin American pontiff in 2013, has made the poor's defence a central theme of his pontificate. Former Cardinal Mario Bergoglio is the first pope to be known as Francis, after the saint who spent most of his life serving the poor.
