Patient's safety is seriously a major issue of concern. It is also a fundamental principle of health care. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as numerous as one in 10 patients is injured while receiving hospital care in developed countries. To increase awareness about the safety of patients, To aware the safety in patient World Patient Safety Day is celebrated every year on 9th of December across the world. The main motto behind this day is to decrease medical errors as well as improve public education about patient safety and the other issues related to it.

Here are some tips to ensure proper patient safety

- You must take an accurate patient identity, such as coding/labeling of the can be helpful.

-Don't use abbreviations while writing prescriptions, rather than you should use capital letters so as to make it easy for the patient to understand.

-Give enough training and team building activities to healthcare professionals.

-Proper healthcare infrastructure is one of the necessary steps that will help in decreasing patient harm during hospitalization.

-Take proper charge when handing over/taking over the patients especially during shifts.

-Engage patients and their families in their own care. Also, adherence to Standard Operative Procedure (SOP) facilitates patient’s safety.

Now, What can patients can do for their own safety? 

-Give your medical records with your caregiver. This may involve the medications you take, any operations you've had in the past or any allergies you may have. This is important because the more your caregiver knows, the more successful your care plan and recovery will be.

-Make sure to ask if you have problems or concerns about your condition or treatment options.

-Always inquire your doctor about the do's and don't of any medical procedure that is prescribed for you. Make sure that you are clear about the side effects it might have.
