World Pneumonia Day 2022: All you need to know about the Day

World Pneumonia Day is on November 12.  The year 2009 observed the first World Pneumonia Day, which was marked by the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia. Their aim was to educate the public about the seriousness of pneumonia and to work together to raise awareness of this often-ignored disease on a worldwide scale. Since the first World Pneumonia Day in 2009, the day has been marked under the general slogan "Healthy Lungs for All." The motto was expanded to include organising campaigns to make treatment facilities accessible to those who are ill and to offer adequate protection against the disease.

Around 1.2 million kids died from pneumonia in the year when the inaugural World Pneumonia Day was marked. In 2013, WHO and UNICEF launched an Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea, four years after this day was observed internationally and globally. The first public-private collaboration, dubbed "Every Breath Counts," was created over the course of the following four years in an effort to help governments implement the Global Action Plan for Pneumonia and Diarrhea (G.A.P.P.D).

In addition to this, many other programmes have been implemented at various levels to combat the attacks made by pneumonia, which continues to be the leading infectious cause of death in both children and adults.

Infectious diseases are particularly dangerous for older adults, people with compromised immune systems, and people with several long-term medical disorders, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In fact, people 65 and older with COPD are 7.7 times more likely to develop pneumococcal pneumonia than those without the condition, and those with asthma are 5.9 times more likely.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises pneumococcal vaccination for all persons aged 65 and over. Yet despite the availability of vaccines, thousands of adults in the United States still experience severe illness, require hospitalisation, or even pass away due to infections. Adult vaccination rates in the United States are still low and far below expert recommendations and government objectives.

Every Breath Counts Coalition is one of first such public-private partnership Coalition came into force in 2017 with an aim to support the low- and middle-income nations to combat the toll due to Pneumonia and other respiratory infection.  In order to close the gap in pneumonia prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, which could prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, a global coalition of UN agencies, including WHO, UNICEF, international NGOs, and various institutions is assisting the governments of various developing nations with awareness campaigns, healthcare support, and better healthcare policies.
