People from different origins and cultures gather together on World Religion Day, which is always held on the third Sunday in January. The day honours the similarities among the world's major religions.

You might be surprised to learn that there are more than 4,000 officially recognised religions worldwide. Churches, congregations, faith communities, tribes, cultures, and movements make up these religions. Despite their abundance, three-quarters of people on earth adhere to one of the five main religions. These includes, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and more.

Christianity is the religion with the greatest number of adherents. There are 2.4 billion Christians in the globe, according to latest data. Islam has the second-largest following with 1.6 billion adherents. Judaism has just 14.3 million adherents worldwide. But of all monotheistic religions, Judaism is among the oldest. The beliefs of these three religions are the foundation of several other religions. Northern India is where both Buddhism and Hinduism got their start.

Other significant world religions include Sikhism, Jainism, Shinto, Gnosticism, Confucianism, and Jainism. There are also several different religions practiced by Native Americans, the African diaspora, and Africans.
Many people have negative opinions on religion. But religion is important for varoius reasons. A person's morality, ethics, and customs are shaped by their religion, which in turn affects how they behave. It also inspires hope in people.

Many people claim that their faith in God or a higher force enables them to overcome challenging circumstances. Having a religion also gives them peace about what happens after they die.

Wishing a very Happy World Religion Day to everyone. Without religion, we will find ourselves lost. Let us make it our strength and let us stay united.
