World Senior Citizen’s Day is annually observed on August 21. It aims to ensure the well-being of older adults, and to raise awareness about the issues that affect their lives. The day also reminds us to appreciate and acknowledge their contributions to society. It's a day to remember and celebrate the older persons and thank them for their contributions.

The history of the World Senior Citizen's Day dates back to 1988. Ronad Reagan, Ex-President of the United States officially founded World Senior Citizen's Day - a day dedicated to older adults and their issues. Various programmes are held throughout the world where elders' life studies, personal experiences are shared and solutions are offered to fight the factors that affect their well-being.

Old age inevitably brings many changes to life - socially, physically and mentally. And when that gets coupled with restrictions stemming from an unprecedented pandemic, it can leave an emotional impact on the elderly who can’t be solely blamed for feeling a sense of isolation.

World Senior Citizen's Day Importance: The World Senior Citizens' Day is an important moment to remind the government of its commitment to work for the welfare of older persons to help them end hunger and poverty for the elderly and people of all ages. The country’s foundation and stable sectors are the result of the hard work of our senior citizens and they deserve all our gratitude.

The elderly population of the world is huge and expected to just keep on growing. By 2025, experts estimate that there will be over one billion people over 65. Because of their experience, expertise, and dedication to life, these people deserve to be recognized for the achievements. Luckily, August 21 is Senior Citizens Day, a national holiday intended to honor and show appreciation for the older adults in our lives.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the issues affecting older persons. It also provides an opportunity to take steps for their respect. Older people are caretakers and custodians of traditions. We should encourage the worldwide celebration of International day for older persons uniquely by spending time with elders, caring for them and understanding their needs and concerns. Older citizens are a significant asset to the nation, and we must treat them with utmost respect and equality.

Today, seniors are still active in their communities and continuing to have a strong presence in the workforce.  For all they do and have achieved for the good of their communities, senior citizens deserve our thanks!
