The UN General Assembly declared 5 November to be World Tsunami Awareness Day in December 2015.

Tsunamis are uncommon. However, they are exceedingly lethal. In 58 different tsunamis over the past century, more than 260,000 people have died. The number of fatalities has eclipsed that of any other natural hazard, averaging 4,600 each catastrophe. International cooperation is essential for a deeper understanding of risk mitigation measures in politics and the general public because tsunamis know no boundaries. Because of this, the UN General Assembly declared 5 November to be World Tsunami Awareness Day and urged everyone to observe it.

The idea for World Tsunami Awareness Day originated in Japan, which has gained significant knowledge in fields like tsunami early warning, public action, and rebuilding better after a disaster to lessen future effects as a result of its repeated, painful experiences. The date of 5 November was selected in honour of a real-life incident from Japan called "Inamura-no-hi," or "burning of the rice sheaves." A farmer noticed the tide dropping during the 1854 earthquake as a warning of an approaching tsunami. To warn the villagers, he set fire to his harvested rice. The villagers ran for higher ground. He assisted his town in rebuilding better in the aftermath by building an embankment and planting trees to act as a tsunami buffer.

The World Tsunami Awareness Day will be observed in partnership with the rest of the United Nations system, according to a mandate from the UN General Assembly given to the UN office for disaster risk reduction (UNISDR).

The commemoration of the day will aid in raising awareness of tsunami threats among people all over the world and will highlight the value of early warning systems in minimising damage from frequently catastrophic natural hazard. It also tries to revive conventional wisdom regarding tsunamis.
