World Championship: Indian wrestlers proved their mettle, great journey

New Delhi: India performed brilliantly in the World Wrestling Championship held at Noor Sultan, Kazakhstan. India received a total of five medals at the World Championships this year, including one silver and four bronze medals.  This is India's best performance so far in this tournament.

For India, Deepak Poonia (86 kg) won Silver, Ravi Kumar Dahiya (57 kg), Rahul Aware (61 kg), Bajrang Punia (65 kg) and Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) won the bronze medal. Prior to the tournament, India's highest hopes for the medal were from Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, who won the nation's gold medal in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

By the end of the tournament, India got wrestlers from whom Indian fans would now expect medals in the Olympics. Among these wrestlers, Junior World Champion Deepak Poonia has emerged as the biggest name. Deepak entered the senior tournament for the first time, and achieved the historic silver medal in the first time. Along with the medal, he also won the Olympic quota for the country. Indian players not only defeated the veterans with their strength, technique, strategy and enthusiasm but also impressed the opponents, their coaches and the spectators who came to watch the match.
