The much-anticipated Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections have been rescheduled to take place on August 7, after facing multiple postponements and legal challenges. Initially set for July 11, the elections were stayed by the Gauhati High Court following a plea from the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) seeking the right to participate in the poll process.
The roadblock to the elections was finally cleared when the Supreme Court intervened and stayed the Gauhati High Court's order. The Assam association had argued that it deserved recognition as an affiliated member of the WFI with voting rights, as recommended by the national federation's Executive Committee on November 15, 2014, but the recognition was denied.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, disaffiliated units from Maharashtra, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan also approached the ad-hoc panel, claiming their eligibility to nominate members for the electoral college and participate in WFI elections.
The Gauhati High Court had previously stayed the polls on June 25, which was also the last date to submit names for the electoral college. Prior to being suspended by the sports ministry, the WFI had set May 7 as the election date.
The suspension of the WFI came after the sports ministry decided to appoint an oversight committee to investigate allegations of sexual harassment of women wrestlers by the national body president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. In response to protests by wrestlers, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur assured that the WFI elections would be held by June 30.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) subsequently announced that the elections would take place on July 4, but due to the contested voting eligibility, the returning officer had to postpone the date to July 11.
To ensure a fair and transparent election process, it is imperative for all stakeholders to work together and resolve any outstanding issues promptly. As the WFI elections approach on August 7, the sporting community will be keenly observing the proceedings, hoping for a positive outcome and the election of deserving representatives to lead Indian wrestling into a promising future.
