Xiaomi India partners United Way to upskill transgender community in India

BANGALORE: Leading smartphone and smart TV company Xiaomi India on Friday disclosed a partnership with United Way India to improve the skills of the nation's transgender minority.

By teaching 100 transgender people in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore how to repair laptops, computers, and mobile phones, the alliance hopes to increase their employability and give them options for stable livelihoods. The skill development programme opens doors for the transgender community to land positions with top mobile firms and pave the road for their entrepreneurial journeys, the company said.

The President of Xiaomi India, Muralikrishnan B, said, "Our partnership with United Way India is a tribute to our unwavering belief in the transformative power of technology, as it can empower people and propel progress to new heights.  "We are excited to work towards enhancing the transgender community's skills, contributing to a more open and equitable society, and giving them a viable future, he siad.

The training curriculum for the chosen candidates will last four months and use an experiential learning strategy. The course will cover a variety of topics, including fundamental electronics, software and hardware, and hands-on practical instruction.

Based on their aptitude for participating in the training as well as their willingness to do so, United Way India will choose recipients in the Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru regions.

After finishing the training, trainees will actively participate in self-employment and income-generating activities.
