New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi may have been continuously promising to clean the Yamuna river water for bathing since December 28, 2013, but according to a report by the environment department, the pollution level in the river has increased further in the last five years after decreasing after 2017. According to the report, the annual average level of organic oxygen demand (BOD) has increased in water samples collected for testing everywhere in the national capital, except Palla. BOD is an important standard for measuring water quality. If the BOD level is less than 3 mg per liter, it is considered a good level.

According to the report, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee collects water samples of the Yamuna river at Palla, Wazirabad, ISBT bridge, ITO bridge, Nizamuddin bridge, Okhla barrage, and Asgarpur. The Yamuna river enters Delhi in Palla itself. The committee's data shows that the annual average BOD level in Palla has not changed significantly in the last five years, but it has increased from about 3 mg per liter in Wazirabad to 9 mg per liter. The BOD level on the ISBT bridge has increased from around 30 mg per liter to 50 mg per liter and on the ITO bridge from 22 to 55 mg per liter.

If BOD is less than 3 mg per liter and dissolved oxygen (DO) content is more than 5 mg per liter, Yamuna river water can be considered right for bathing.
