ADEN: At least ten soldiers were killed in fierce battle between pro-government Yemeni troops and Houthi rebels in the southern province of Dhalea on Tuesday, a military officer said.

According to reports, the clashes erupted as "hundreds of Houthi rebels launched an armed attack and sought to move into strategic districts in the region." The Houthi onslaught was halted by government forces after hours of violent battle near the Qatabah district in northern Dhalea.

The official said, at least ten persons from both sides were killed in the violence, with approximately 14 more injured. Meanwhile, sporadic fighting between Yemeni government forces backed by Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels backed by Iran continues in several parts of the war-torn Arab country.

During the previous 48 hours, the country's northern provinces, particularly the oil-rich province of Marib, have seen the bloodiest battles amid increasing bombings. The Saudi-led coalition's airstrikes have damaged a number of Houthi-held targets in Yemen's capital Sanaa and surrounding areas.
