Over the last decade, we have seen the importance of social media grow rapidly. With this, a large amount of consumer is out there in the virtual space and thus brands are onto reach them through various strategies. Of them, the most popular and effective is influencer marketing.

Influencers in social media are people who have built a reputation and a wide range of followers for their knowledge and expertise on a specific topic. They make regular posts about that topic on their preferred social media channels and draw the attention of their audience.

Brands love social media influencers because they can create trends and encourage their followers to buy products that they promote.

Now the common notion of people is that it may take a lot of investment to create a digital presence. But that’s not entirely true. To explain things further, we got in touch with Anubhav Mukherjee, Founder of The Kolkata Buzz the favorite social media platform of Bongs that has garnered 216k Followers on Instagram, and 1 Million + on Facebook within 5 years. Anubhav shares his experience of how he built the platform from scratch with very little investment.

Mukherjee was from Chhattisgarh and came to Kolkata initially to learn filmmaking. That’s when he started capturing pictures and videos of the city and post them on Facebook. As the response was great he started his page by the name – The Kolkata Buzz. The Bengali population loved the content and soon the page was a hit during Durga Puja and that made Anubhav drop his film studies to pursue a full-time career in digital.

“Some years ago I came to Kolkata for learning filmmaking. At that time, I was kind of inspired by the movie Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani so I would roam around the city and anywhere I went, I used to take as many pictures and videos as I could, and then post them on my newly created page. The response was pretty good but I wasn’t generating any revenue for many months. Yet I kept up my work and at the time of Pujo, it was a hit. That’s when I left film making and dedicated all my time to the platform,” says Anubhav.

As he said, initially Anubhav didn’t make any money. All he had was an old laptop and his cell phone that led to the whole platform. Also, to cut expenses he used wifi at cafes. To make things more effective, he self-educated himself in digital marketing.

“My initial investment in the venture was just my time. I had a ten-year-old laptop and my cell phone that were the only gadgets. My budget was pretty tight as there was no turnover initially so I went to cafes and used wifi that they provided to customers. Also, I did not know about social media so I started to spend time watching tutorials on youtube to educate myself,” shares Anubhav.

As the platform grew, brands started approaching him and he gradually started generating some revenue. That’s when he felt the need for assistance and started hiring freelancers.

“One day I got a call from a person who wanted to advertise on my platform and he offered me some token of money. That’s how the platform helped me to mint money and I never looked back. As the work increased, I started pooling in freelancers and today I have some dedicated members along with project-based employees who work for me,” Anubhav says.

The platform’s overwhelming success led Anubhav to start his own registered company - Buzzaffair ventures (OPC) PRIVATE LIMITED. They are now into brands, Influencer marketing, event promotions, and social media management. With this, he has covered hundreds of brands locally, nationally, and internationally.

“I have always tried to make the most out of less and that’s my strategy which helped me survive so far. So, if you are into digital and want to make it big, you don’t need a lot of money to be an influencer. Just spend wisely”, Anubhav concludes.
