Kohima: Eight-year-old Zaigum Zeliang, a student of Zayigum, Holotoli School in Dimapur, did something he hadn't even heard of before. Today, Zayigum is one of the youngest certified app developers in Nagaland. Kangzhang Zeliang, a Class 3 student and his father recently teamed up for the Nagaland Hackathon 2021, a start-up run by the Department of Industry and Commerce and Educentre, held from August 2-20. The father-son duo not only finished second in the competition but also won the award for the best social media team by winning a cash prize of Rs 25,000, the result of which was announced on Monday.
“Initially, they had no idea about computers or smartphones. We never gave him a chance to play games on his mobile phone. We introduced him to coding in April last year through an online learning platform. He is now on track to complete six master classes and will go on to learn programming at a professional level," he said, adding that he created a prototype for an app called 'Feed the Needy', an app that is donated to charity. People can donate extra food – cooked or raw – to those in need. After the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) campaign, it was renamed 'Give the Needy' as suggestions for us to explore beyond food. Meet, where people can donate books, kitchen items, furniture and anything else to the needy people.
Another app is in the making
Zaigam is also working on app named PTI (Parents Teachers Interaction) app since last year. As the pandemic was spreading across the country, the young boy sought to create digital communication between parents and teachers and track their performance. The father said that both the apps will be formally launched between 4-6 weeks.
