NEW DELHI: In a big relief to the thousands of passport applicants those who don’t have documents related to proof of birth date as ministry of external affairs on Friday eased certain rules.

Government announced new provisions aiming to streamline and easing the passport application process. Under the new norms, Aadhar and E-aadhar card will consider as proof of date of birth.
Earlier, all applicants had to mandatorily submit their birth certificates as proof of date of birth. The latest revision in the rules now includes the Aadhar card as acceptable proof of DOB.

Government also declared to relax norms pertaining passport application including the requirement of proving names of both parents. The passport application form now requires the applicant to provide the name of father or mother or legal guardian, that is, only one parent and not both.

As per the extant statutory provisions of the Passport Rules, 1980, all the applicants born on or after 26 January 1989, in order to get a passport, had to, hitherto, mandatorily submit the `Birth Certificate' as proof of date of birth.

It has now been decided that all applicants of passports can submit any one of the documents, including: birth certificate issued by any prescribed authority empowered to register the birth of a child born in India, transfer/school leaving/matriculation certificate issued by the school last attended/recognised educational board, PAN card, Aadhar card or E-Aadhar, attested copy of the extract of the service record or the Pay Pension Order, driving licence, election photo ID card, or policy bond issued by LIC.
