GUWAHATI:  A YouTuber was arrested by police and forest guards in the Kokrajhar area of western Assam for taking wild parakeets and selling them on his channel.

Along with seizing two parakeets from his custody, the authorities were responding to a complaint made by PETA India.

In the district's Gossaigaon district, a special operation was conducted against the YouTuber Jahidul Islam. His channel is called Jahid Lifestyle.

PETA India made an official complaint to Assam's senior chief conservator of forests and the divisional forest officer of Kachugaon. The Kachugaon Forest Division reported a preliminary offence in accordance with the pertinent provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.

According to Schedule IV of the Act, parakeets are protected, and it is illegal to capture, keep, or sell them.

The YouTuber and his collaborators can be seen approaching wooded regions, scaling trees to get to the parakeets' nests, and then capturing them in the films. The newborn parakeets are seen being fed a mixture of processed sugary biscuits and water, which is against their natural diet, under the guise of making "educational" information about how to care for and feed parakeets.

"PETA India applauds the Kachugaon forest division for catching the offender and recovering the parakeets, who shouldn't have been captured in the first place and who deserve to be set free once more. According to Saloni Sakaria, the cruelty response coordinator for PETA India, "capturing, purchasing, selling, or caging parakeets is unlawful and can result in a jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to 25,000, or both.
