Kyiv: 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia's invasion in February, according to a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"The General Staff has provided us with official estimates ... and the number of dead is between 10,000 and 13,000," Mykhailo Podolić told Ukraine's Channel 24 on Thursday.

Zelensky promised that he would release official data "at the appropriate time".

In June, Zelensky reported that Ukraine was losing "60 to 100 soldiers per day, killed in action, and nearly 500 wounded in action" as Russian forces fought to gain full control of the eastern Lugansk region. .

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in September that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed in the first nearly seven months of fighting in the conflict.

Both sides are suspected of downplaying their casualties in order to keep up the morale of their troops.

Last month, senior US general Mark Milley claimed that more than 100,000 Russian military personnel had been killed or wounded in Ukraine, and that similar casualties were probably suffered by Kyiv's forces.

These US government figures are the most accurate to date, although they cannot be independently verified.
