Makar Sankranti is known by the various names but, something that is important about this festival is, why we celebrate it? The festival is celebrated during the month of 'Magha' (January). It is the first festival in 'Hindu Calendar'.

This festival is marked on the day, when Sun begun its Northward journey and entered into the sign of Makar that means, Capricorn. Word 'Makar' means the 'Capricorn' and Sankranti means 'the movement of Earth around sun'.
This movement has settled the the study of 'Astrology', as during this movement sun transforms into various 'zodiac signs'.
This day is considered to be of great significance as it has the same day and night hours and from this day, all the other days become warm and long.People of Northern hemisphere noticed the sun more close to them than in other normal days.
