The government has asked all the banks to activate net banking for every account by March 31 and mandatorily link them to Aaddhar numbers.
As of now, 65 percent of bank account holders are Internet banking-enabled and 35 per cent have not linked their accounts to Internet banking. The government wants to make these accounts Internet-enabled by March 31.
"Banks have been requested to get Aadhaar on board by March 31. This would mean that the bank account is ceded to Aadhaar that will enable easier digital transactions," said the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The minister will also take a meeting with all bankers to sort out all the issues on this front in the second week of March. Government's drive towards electronic transactions gathered pace after the demonetization exercise announced on November 8.
