Asking for their equal rights, without whom the whole country would be hungry, the farmers have been facing a lot of dispute as they aren’t being provided with fair prices for their produce. They have been asking for the waiver of the loans but nobody is willing to open that can of the worms.
Since June 1 when the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) announced the agitation, farmers started the protests in Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam and Indore districts. They set fire to nearly a dozen of vehicles and set their sight on the railway tracks near Mandsaur late Monday. The Security agencies flung tear-gas shells to disperse the mob when traffic was blocked near Pipalia Mandi and stones were pelted on police and CRPF personnel.
This violent riot led to the death of at least six farmers and eight injured farmers in Mandsaur. It’s yet not sure who ordered for the fire. Trying to estimate the cost of a person’s life, compensation of Rs 1crore and a job to the kin member of each dead and free treatment to the injured with Rs 5 lakhs.Chief Minister Chouhan expressed his grief and despair and alleged Congress of spurring farmers.
After the healthy talks with Mr. Chauhan in which he assured purchasing onions at 8 rupees, the agitation almost came to an end but still remains along two belts: Nashik-Ahmednagar-Pune extending to Satara-Sangli-Kolhapur in Maharashtra, and Ratlam-Mandsaur-Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh.
There has been the wide gap between the prices which were paid last year to the farmers and what is paid in the current year.
Methi seeds, Onions, grapes, soyabean’s prices have crashed from Rs 4,000-4,500; Rs 800;Rs 50; Rs 3,500-3,600 to Rs 2,500-3,000; Rs 450; Rs 15; Rs 2,700-2,800 per quintal respectively.
It’s very disrupting seeing the plight of the farmers and the consequences the protest led to. The government shouldn’t turn a deaf ear to their demands by disconnecting cell phone and internet connections, rather it should address their plea and give them all the rights they are worthy of.
