The Indian government is completely abolishing the use of 500 and 1000 rupee notes for the local transactions. The government has asked the citizens to deposit all old currency notes and get newly printed notes instead of them until December 30, 2016.
Taking a precautionary step ahead of this e-commerce sites are avoiding using 500 and 1000 rupee notes for all cash on delivery transactions. They have issued a notification within the application saying that they will only accept the amount in the denomination of 100 only. For all the existing orders which were placed and already checked out with the COD as the payment method will now ask to revise the payment mode again.
Flipkart shows a message stating that cash on delivery is not available - but we noticed that this message was only shown for items priced at Rs. 2,000. Snapdeal on the other hand also does the same, but additionally, displays a message reminding people that Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes will not be accepted for deliveries.
Grofers appears to be accepting cash, with no warning messages. The same appears to be true for Ola. On the other hand, if you rely on Zomato or Swiggy for your snacking, you'll need to use an electronic payment method, as CoD is being disabled, to "avoid confusion".
