Junk food today has become the most fastest and convenient way to feed our kids and our kids seem to love it even more. Fatty and unhealthy food are popular among young children and adolescents, but unfortunately, junk food is found to potentially damage the immature brain of children if it is consumed over an extended period of time. High consumption of fatty foods during adolescence may impair cognitive functions in adulthood.
According to a recent study conducted by researchers from ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, the scientists arrived at a worrying conclusion after performing a study comparing the impact on the brains of juvenile and adult mice on being fed either an extremely high-fat diet or normal food. After a period of just four weeks, the researchers detected the signs of impairment in the cognitive functions of young mice fed on a high-fat diet. These problems materialised even before the mice actually started to show any weight gain.
The prefrontal cortex looks after memory, attention and impluse control and social behavior. If this area of the brain is not functioning correctly it can lead to cognitive deficits and personality changes and can have difficulty with complex learning processes, become aggressive, childish or compulsive.
