Sania Mirza, Indian Tennis player was involved in an alleged case of non-payment of Servis Tax. The player now has denied any tax evasion. On February 16, Sania's Chartered Accountant appeared on her behalf before the Service Tax authorities for the summons issued to the player on February 16.
"Sania's representative submitted certain documents before the Service Tax authorities and contended that the Rs 1 crore she received from Telangana government was training incentive and the amount was not towards becoming state's brand ambassador," a source close to the CA informed.
Now before taking any action, the authorities are going through the documents submitted.
Earlier, the source informed "The amount she received for being 'Brand Ambassador' falls under the Service Tax purview and it is due for Tax payment. Rs one crore amount attracts Service Tax of 14.5 per cent besides interest, and penalty has also to be paid on the tax."
As per the information, Sania was earlier given one crore rupees by the Telangana government in order to prepare for major tournaments for being the 'Brand Ambassador' of the state.
