SHEOPUR: A poor farmer in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh was stunned after he received new crispy currency notes of denomination Rs 2,000 without Mahatma Gandhi image on Tuesday. Laxman Meena received three notes like that from a public sector bank branch, when he withdrew 6,000 rupees.

"I was given three notes of Rs. 2,000 on withdrawal from my account on December 3. I later found that there was no image of Mahatma Gandhi on those," Meena said.

The farmer discovered the anomaly a little after he left the bank and was in the market. "I then went to the bank and showed it to the manager," he said.

To his immense relief, the bank official assured him that the notes are genuine, and advised him to deposit them.

"At first, the manager told me I must have seen the notes when I took them... Later, he told me to deposit the notes and get them replaced," the farmer said.

The manager explained that there might have been a printing error at one press. Meena's notes have been replaced by the bank since. Another customer in the area also reported the same problem.

Notes with Gandhi's images - a part of the Gandhi series - replaced all currency in 1996.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi suddenly banned the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes on November 8, the new 2,000 rupee notes were printed under the "Mahatma Gandhi New Series".
