Kochi: A college student from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has made history. She has been elected as the youngest mayor of the country. Arya Rajendran is just 21 years old. She initially felt that some of her college friends had pranked her, but when she got a call from the District Secretariat of the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) and asked to be given a prestigious position in the party, Then she realized its truth. She was told by the party that she would be the new mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. It is noteworthy that elections were held recently for mayor and local bodies. In the 100-member corporation, the ruling party has won 51 seats, while the BJP has won 35 seats. The ruling party then surprised everyone by handing over the coveted post to the first-time councillor. Senior party leader Jamila Sreedharan and two others were also in the race, but the party chose a young leader in their place. Arya is a second-year BSC Mathematics student at All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram. She is definitely young in the council, but politics is not new to her. She became a member of Bala Sangam, a party-related children's organization, at the age of six and is now its state president. She is also an officer of Students Federation of India, Youth Branch of the party.
