6 Crore Jobs in Textiles Sector? Govt Unveils Ambitious Plan by 2030

New Delhi: The Indian government has unveiled a strategic roadmap to create 4.5 to 6 crore jobs in the textile sector by 2030, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said on Friday. He emphasized the goal of expanding the market size of the textile industry from the current USD 165 billion to USD 350 billion by the end of the decade.

Speaking at a press briefing highlighting the Ministry of Textiles' 100-day action plan, Singh detailed the government's efforts to boost investment in the sector, saying, "The roadmap we have outlined includes attracting investments worth lakhs of crores. We aim to create 4.5 to 6 crore jobs in the textile industry by 2030."

Singh also highlighted that the seven integrated PM-MITRA mega textile parks, approved earlier, will attract investments totaling Rs 70,000 crore once fully operational, generating 21 lakh new jobs.

Comparing Past and Present Efforts

Taking a swipe at previous Congress-led administrations, Singh claimed they were slow to act during their initial months in power. "Earlier governments would spend the first three months doing little, while today some leaders continue to criticize from abroad. In contrast, the Modi government has already established a roadmap for development within its first 100 days," he remarked.

Singh reiterated the government's ambitious vision of growing India's textile sector to USD 350 billion, focusing on expanding capacities in man-made fibers, including synthetic, viscose, and natural fibers. He also noted that over 350 international brands source their textiles from India, emphasizing the importance of both export and domestic markets.

Challenges and Targets

India's textile exports have been on a decline for two consecutive years, with the export value dropping 3.24% to USD 34.4 billion in FY24 compared to USD 35.5 billion the previous year. Despite this, the government has set a bold target of achieving USD 100 billion in textile exports by 2030.

Singh addressed concerns about competition from neighboring countries, stating that neither Bangladesh nor Vietnam poses a significant challenge to India's textile industry. "We are committed to promoting 'Make in India' for textiles to meet the growing needs of our population, which is expanding by more than Australia's population each year," he said.

Reviving Bhagalpur’s Silk Industry

The minister, representing Begusarai in Bihar, also announced plans to revive Bhagalpur's silk industry, a historically significant sector in the state. The new scheme aims to rejuvenate the region's traditional silk production and enhance employment opportunities.
