Tirupur: In a recent incident found that a 62-year-old man, S Thangamuthu, and his 57-year-old wife Valliyammal allegedly killed themselves by setting themselves on fire after losing all hopes of a normal life, post their 35-year-old son's death a few months ago. It is reported that the shocking incident happened in Kangeyam, in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur district on Monday. The old man had retired from his government job as an assistant to a village administrative officer at Sivanmalai, two years ago. His son Chandrashekhar had suffered severe kidney failure and had subsequently died a few months ago. His wife had allegedly deserted the family and in fact she left behind the 10-year-old son Tharun with the couple, as she took off with another man. The source report says that Thangamuthu and Valliyammal were both depressed and the man also suffered from diabetes. Recently Thangamuthu had fallen ill and had approached a private hospital for treatment. Apparently, the hospital advised him to get admitted to any hospital as he required immediate medical attention. Treatment at a government hospital was an option as Thangamuthu had no financial support. The couple felt depressed and returned home. While on Monday, they sent away the grandchild outside and doused themselves in fuel, before setting themselves on fire. The child rushed in on seeing the flames and smoke and tried to save the couple, in the process getting scalded himself. When the boy (Tharun) ran outside screaming for help, neighbours rushed to save the family. But the couple were declared brought in dead by the hospital.
