Actress Charlbi Dean dies at 32

The South African actor and model Charlbi Dean passed away at the age of 32. Dean's breakthrough performance was in "Triangle of Sadness," which took home the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Her agents said Tuesday that Dean passed away on Monday at a hospital in New York from an unanticipated illness. In the DC Comics television series "Black Lightning," which aired on the CW from 2018 to 2021, Dean also played the assassin Syonide in recurrent episodes. She was raised in Cape Town, where she was born Charlbi Dean Kriek.

Dean and Harris Dickinson play a famous fashion-model couple on an opulent trip that devolves into turmoil in "Triangle of Sadness," the Swedish director Ruben stlund's first English-language picture since "Force Majeure." Woody Harrelson plays the ship's captain in it as well.

The movie premieres in the US and the majority of Europe in October after winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes in May. At the festival, before the film won the award, Dean told The Associated Press, “For me, I’m like, I’ve already won. I’m already at Cannes with the movie. That’s so unbelievable. Anything is just a cherry on top at this point for me, you know?”

Dean started off as a child model, and over the years, he frequently appeared on magazine covers and fashion runways. She survived a near-fatal car accident in 2009.

She made her acting debut in the 2010 movie "Spud," which starred Troye Sivan and John Cleese and was based on a well-known South African novel about a boys' boarding school. In a 2013 sequel, she played the same part again.
