New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday cited the Central government's refusal to renew FCRA registration for missionaries of charity, claiming that after Muslims, Christians have now become the new target of the Hindutva brigade. Chidambaram also claimed that the mainstream media removed the news of the Home Ministry's action related to missionaries of charity (MoC) from its pages. He has described it as "tragic and shameful." Chidambaram tweeted, "Rejection of renewal of MoC is a direct attack on NGOs who are doing public service to the "poor and most unhappy" people of India.'' Chidambaram wrote, "In the case of MoC, it shows prejudice and intolerance towards Christian charitable activities. After Muslims, Christians are the new targets of the Hindutva brigade.'' Chidambaram had tweeted yesterday that "There can be nothing more shocking than denying future foreign contributions to missionaries of charity in Kolkata, West Bengal. This is the greatest disrespect to the memory of Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to the care of India's 'poor and miserable."' Chidambaram had said, ''The Home Ministry claims to have received "some adverse inputs." The Interior Ministry should use skills like its Sherlock Holmes to suppress communal violence and terrorist activities, not Christian charities and suppress humanitarian work. At the end of 2021, it is clear that the Modi government has made another target 'Christian' to advance its majoritarian agenda.''
