Agnipath scheme needs reconsideration: Mayawati

LUCKNOW: Mayawati, the president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), slammed the central government's new 'Agnipath' scheme for recruiting soldiers, calling it "unfair to the rural youth."

The Agnipath programme is a method of recruiting soldiers for the Army, Navy, and Air Force on a four-year contract basis. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the plan on Tuesday.

After keeping army recruiting on hold for a long time, the Centre has recently unveiled a new 'Agniveer' recruitment scheme with a four-year term in the army. Despite the fact that it has been described as an appealing programme, the country's youth are unhappy and outraged. They are outspoken in their opposition to the army's new recruitment procedure "In a tweet, Mayawati said.

"They feel the government is limiting soldiers' tenure to four years in order to decrease pension benefits in the army and government positions, which is highly unfair and detrimental to the future of rural children and their families" she said,  The BSP president warned in a series of Hindi tweets that the new recruitment policy will exacerbate the people's problems, which currently include inflation and poverty.

"People in the country are already suffering from increased poverty, inflation, unemployment, wrong policies, and the government's arrogant working style. In such a circumstance, the fear that has spread among the youth about the army's new recruitment procedure is raising concern.
