New Delhi: One billion 300 million tonnes of garbage is wasted worldwide every year. Most of this agricultural waste is then destroyed in the field itself. Some garbage comes out of mills and factories, while some from kitchens. Coming to our country, 350 million tonnes of agricultural waste or farm waste is generated every year, which we consider useless, but that is not really the case. Now, this waste can also make millionaires. Our scientists are developing many methods and techniques that can convert waste into precious. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy estimates that this waste can generate 18,000 MW of electricity per year along with green manure. Agriculture and kitchen waste share are very high. According to a report, taking potatoes alone wastes about 1 crore 2o lakh tonnes of potatoes every year all over the world. Potatoes destroyed in India weigh 2 million tonnes. When the Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014, there was also a serious brainstorming on making agricultural waste a success. The idea was to make products that could be of use to humans, either to animals or to crops. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) of Delhi played an important role in this. ICAR has started working with all institutions on processing techniques that can make money from waste. Under this, paper is being made from shoe waste, as well as agricultural waste is being used to make manure and cattle feed.
