CHENNAI: On Saturday, workers from the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK battled during an indirect poll for Town Panchayat President and Vice-President in Vellalore, close here, culminating in a minor cane charge by the police. According to police, a DMK worker was injured in the incident, and they had to intervene to disperse DMK and AIADMK personnel who were participating. Following a dispute between AIADMK and DMK councillors, elections for the two positions had to be postponed on March 4. Police have filed a complaint against 15 newly elected councillors for obstructing the executive officer's role as election officer. In Vellalore, the AIADMK won eight of the fifteen wards, while the DMK won six and an independent won the other. As the election campaign got underway, there was an argument between DMK and AIADMK workers, which resulted in a brawl. The police officers on the scene attempted to maintain order and prevent workers from both parties from entering the polling station.
