NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan on Wednesday to legendary socialist leader and former UP CM Late Mulayam Singh Yadav and globally acclaimed medic Dilip Mahalanabis. Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty received the Padma Bhushan at the second civil investiture event for the Padma awards. She was joined by her husband, Infosys founder Narayan Murthy, and daughter Akshata, who is the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. On behalf of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi patriarch's son and former CM of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav accepted the Padma Vibhushan. Susham Gupta, however, was the recipient of Mahalanabis' Padma. Sister Uma Mani accepted the Padma Bhushan that was posthumously given to famed vocalist Vani Jairam. The Padma awards were also given to the physicist Deepak Dhar, who is well-known for his extensive work in statistical physics, the novelist S. L. Bhyrappa, the Vedic scholar Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, the educationist Antaryami Mishra, and the genetic medicine expert Dr. Ishwar Chander Verma from Odisha. Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon and music director M M Keeravaani, whose original song "Naatu Naatu" won the Oscar, also received the Padma Shri. The event's audience applauded Keeravaani the loudest.
