Andhra football player stabbed to death by rivals

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra state-level football player was stabbed to death in Vijayawada by rivals, police said. After a scuffle at a bar in Gurunanak Colony late Tuesday, rivals killed Akash (23) at a friend's residence.

Shankar alias Tony, a resident of Vambay Colony in the city, died on Tuesday in suspicious circumstances. An autopsy was performed on his body at Government General Hospital (GGH). There were a lot of Tony's fans there as well. They then proceeded to a nearby bar to drink alcohol. Tony's supporters were split into two factions.

Akash, a member of one gang, got into a fight with members of the other. One of the rivals was assaulted by Akash. Akash was taken to his friend's house in Gurunanak Colony by several people present at the pub, where he slept drunk. Ten members of the rival gang arrived at the friend's residence after learning about Akash's presence. At the residence, there were four persons, including Akash. When they saw the rival gang, two of them ran away, while another was threatened and sent out.

The assailants stabbed Akash several times before fleeing. Akash's buddies returned after some time and discovered him lying in a pool of blood. They took him to a private hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors. He was stabbed 16 times.

Senior police authorities arrived at the hospital, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Khadar Basha, and had the body transported to GGH for autopsy.
