Former RBI Governor Urjit Patel's birthday today, know all about his career

New Delhi: Dr Urjit Patel was born on this day in 1963. He has been the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He took this post after the retirement of Raghuram Rajan in September 2016, but he resigned from his post on 10 December 2018 amid reports of a tussle with the government. Urjit Patel had said in his statement that he is resigning due to personal reasons. Urjit Patel became the first RBI governor to sign new notes ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 2000. 

Patel was appointed as the Governor of RBI on 4 September 2016 by the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Prior to this, from January 14, 2013, he was working as the Deputy Governor. As Deputy Governor, he headed the Expert Committee on Monetary Policy. Representing India, he played a key role in Inter-Governmental Agreements and Inter-Central Bank Agreements (ICBA) with BRICS countries Establishment of Contingency Reserve Arrangement (CRA), which is a swap line framework between the central banks of these countries.

Urjit Patel got a new responsibility in 2021. He was associated with the private sector. Biscuit and dairy product maker Britannia Industries appointed Urjit Patel as the additional director of the company. In 2022, Urjit Patel has been made the vice-chairman of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, a Beijing-based multilateral financing institution.
